Name: Summer Reading Club begins at the Library
Date: June 12, 2017
Time: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
Summer is a great time to build, create and have fun with friends! This year, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that at the Gary Byker Memorial Library. The annual summer reading clubs will kick off on June 12 with registration available at the library or online. Participants in the summer reading club for children and teens, themed “Build a Better World,” may pick up a reading log June 12 and keep track of the hours read until July 29. Kids and teens can turn in logs between June 19 and Aug. 5, and will receive rewards along the way based on the amount of reading or activities completed. If they fill out the logs completely, they will be entered to win a grand prize, awarded in two age groups. Many activities are planned for children and families at the library, including building an aquarium, Air Zoo presents a Rockin', Roller Coaster build, a chalk art contest, building with LEGOS, creating a gnome/fairy house and more! Teens have the opportunity to practice nature photography, build a Bristle Bot. TWEEN and TEENS can join us every Monday for MAKERSPACE Mondays. Each Monday we will have a new maker project for hands on fun such as make your own slime, use our button maker, sewing, tech-tale apart and more! For the younger set, there are weekly activities such as Move to the Music for ages 2-5 and Summer Storytime for families. More information on events can be found at the library’s website and Facebook page. There will also be activities surrounding the 2017 solar eclipse that occurs on Monday, August 21. All summer reading club finishers will receive a pair of solar glasses and information on library events about this special event. NASA mentions that the last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979. Those in Hudsonville will see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk at its peak time of 2:33pm. Not to be left out, adults can join in the fun as well in their own “Annual Reading Club for Perennial Readers,” sponsored by Gemmen’s Hardware. They are asked to read eight books in a variety of genres, fill out a mini review slip and submit them to the library. Once completed with all eight, adults will be entered to win a $100 gift card from Gemmen’s Hardware or a $20 gift card from Vitale’s restaurant. Both reading clubs will offer weekly raffle prizes to participants for fun prizes.
